About us

The Donald Asmonga Foundation is established in honor of Belle Vernon Area’s most winning coach, Donald Asmonga, who served as the school’s first basketball and baseball coach and the only coach to capture a Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League (WPIAL) championship.

A highly-recognized and accomplished athlete, Asmonga played professional baseball and basketball, played baseball, football and basketball for Alliance College, and may be best known for his basketball play at Homestead High School, where they secured a State Championship.  While coaching baseball at Belle Vernon, Asmonga also served as a recommending scout for the Cincinnati Reds.  His tremendous passion for golf occupied his later years.

His love of sports extended beyond being a player and coach to that of an active spectator and student of many games.  Asmonga followed a variety of televised sporting events spouting off statistics and sharing his opinions on teams and athletes.  The father of six children, he was often seen on the sidelines of his grandchildren’s events whether it be lacrosse, tennis, wrestling, or hockey.

Asmonga truly loved and lived sports.
